Affordable Art Fair Highlights - Education is at the Heart of the Fair
Set to take place 22nd - 24th May, the countdown begins to this year’s Affordable Art Fair, bringing to the city another exciting Fair full of fun, fresh artwork and interactive art experiences. With education at the heart of the Fair, this year is all about encouraging visitors to start, or continue, their love affair with art.
From the seasoned collector and art enthusiast to those simply passionate about art, Affordable Art Fair creates a fun, inspiring and relaxed atmosphere to fall in love with art and to find that perfect piece to complement the home. Visitors can browse through thousands of art works at their leisure, with pieces ranging from HK $1,000 to HK$100,000 and with over 130 local and international galleries exhibiting this year, there are thousands of artworks to enjoy, and to buy! The fun-filled weekend will host a series of fun art education programmes including complimentary art talks, tours, artists’ demonstrations, creative workshops and on-site wrapping stations, for visitors to package-up their purchases to take home on the spot.
With the Fair just around the corner, the Affordable Art Fair team share their highlights of what’s in store this year:
RADO ART TALKS AND TOURS
Free to all who visit the Fair, visitors can learn about different art styles and techniques through a series of RADO Art Talks and Tours. Artists will share their inspiration and techniques across various mediums such as photography, printing and painting. Gallery Speed Dating also offers visitors a fun way to find their own gallery soul-mate, visiting 5 galleries in 30 minutes visitors will learn about different materials, artists and curation styles.
For those looking to buy their first piece or to grow their existing collection, the Fair will also host several art talks throughout the weekend covering subjects on how to live with art; including finding the perfect frame, hanging tips and protecting and preserving your treasured art pieces from issues such as intense sunlight and humidity.
CREATIVE WORKSHOPS FOR YOUNG & OLD
Returning favourites to the Fair this year include the educational Children’s Art Studio hosted by the Sovereign Art Foundation, designed for little ones to harness their inner Picasso. These fun-filled workshops are designed to encourage children’s creativity through building sculpture, drawing and working with colour, leaving parents free to browse the galleries care-free or head over for a delicious refresher at the Peroni Bar or Nespresso Cafè. The DBS Spark Corner by Art Loop also welcomes artists of all ages to create a crowd-sourced artwork, focusing on love and colour. Open over all three Fair days, these activities are complimentary and will be hosted in both English and Chinese language.
ART AFTER DARK PERFORMANCES
Kick off the weekend with Art After Dark on Friday 22nd from 6pm – 10pm and enjoy an evening filled with interactive art performances and live demonstrations, music and rubbing shoulders with cool creatives – as well as giving visitors another opportunity to buy art! HKwall(s) brings their street inspiration indoors and will be transforming the Education Space into a work of art. Yoga-art brings art and yoga together with instructor Cindy Leung from Yoogaia, painting on a large canvas holding painting tools with her hands and feet, to create an inspiring mural. Renown for using brown packing tape as a medium, Max Zorn, an innovative street artist will be creating distinctive works at the Stick Together gallery booth and Education Area of the Fair. Join petit morpho artists Øyvind Johnsen and Nata Ngai with “Hoop Yokai”, a live art performance using animated and visual graphics as a way for dancers to express themselves during their performance, using a simple hoop. Sol Passion Music will keep visitor’s toes tapping with a live DJ booth as well as workshops for budding DJs of all ages. Fair-goers can also bring home a crafty souvenir from the interactive Encaustic Workshop by Galerie Koo using rice paper and beeswax.
